He walked Katie to the main house, sensing her tension. Because of his touch? Had he really kissed her? Yes, the sweet echo of her lips on his told him it was not a dream. He shouldn’t have done it. There was a boatload of reasons the kiss was ill-advised. His brain recognized them, but his heart kept on beating a happy rhythm in his chest.

Stop, he told himself severely. There’s no room for a relationship here. Keep your kisses to yourself. And Katie didn’t want him in that way, clearly, or had he detected the smallest measure of matched feeling in her?

There’s your imagination going again. You convinced yourself Jamie wanted you. Don’t let your own dumb history repeat itself.

He marched them both toward the main house until Katie tugged at his arm.

“Too fast,” she said. “Your legs are way longer than mine. Can we slow to a sprint?”

“Sorry,” he said, letting her go and slackening his pace. He wanted to snatch up her hand in his, to feel those slender fingers in his palm. Stop. They made it to the main house. Somehow he needed to talk to her about his idea of sleeping in the living room.

As they entered, the old wall phone was ringing. He closed the door and checked the cameras while Katie picked it up.

“Hello?”

There was a pause. “Hello?” she said again.

After a moment, she hung up. “No one there.”

No one there. The tightening of those lips that he’d just kissed told him she had doubts. No one? Or Terrence, checking to see if she was home? That sealed it.

“Katie, I think I should sleep downstairs on the sofa. I’m sure nothing will happen with Terrence, but I’d feel better if Ella and I were closer.” There. He’d stated his case.

He saw her chin go up, the arms folded over her chest that indicated she was evaluating if the idea was a threat to her hard-won independence. “I... Um, okay. I’ll get some blankets for you.”

And then she went off to the closet, pulling out way too many blankets and pillows.

He smiled to himself. Maybe she was gradually learning to trust him. “Looks like we’re sacking out here for the night, El.” He turned to find she was already at home on the sofa, paws hanging off the edge of the cushion.

Katie smiled at the dog. “There’s peanut butter and jelly in the kitchen if either of you get hungry,” she said.

“Appreciate it.”

“Is there anything else you need?” she asked.

“No, thank you. Ella and I are self-sufficient.”

She nodded. “I know.”

His phone rang. “Hey, Charlie,” he said, surprised at the butcher’s call. “What’s up?”

He hit the speaker button so Katie could hear also.

“I was packaging up an order for delivery to the café and I saw him,” he said.

“Terrence?”

“Yes. He’s in an old banged-up RV headed north toward Pine Gap. I’m following him right now.”

Brayden was on his feet. “License number? I’m calling the local cops. Don’t approach him, Charlie. He’s dangerous.”

“Wait—he’s pulling off into the woods.
